vCalendar FAQ

What is "vCalendar" format?
vCalendar is an open standard for exchanging calendar data on the internet. It is designed to facilitate the sharing of calendar data among different systems - web sites, desktop calendar applications, PDAs, etc. vCalendar is used by many popular calendaring programs including Palm Desktop, Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, and Apple's iCal.

What are the steps involved in adding events to my calendar program?

  1. Save your event(s) to your hard drive as a vCalendar (*.vcs) file
  2. Import your vCalendar file into your desktop calendar program
  3. Synch your desktop calendar with your PDA/phone (optional)

How do I import my events into my PDA or desktop calendar program?
This will vary depending on the calendar program you use, but most give the option to "import" events through the File menu. Once the events are in your calendar program, you can synchronize your PDA or phone as you normally do to move the events to that device.

Importing to Palm Desktop (Windows)

  1. In Palm Desktop, choose "Import..." from the File menu
  2. Locate the vCalendar file on your hard drive (you may need to select "vCal File (*.vcs)" in the file types drop down list)
  3. Select the vCalendar file and click Import

Importing to Microsoft Outlook (Windows)

  1. In Outlook, choose "Import and Export..." from the File menu
  2. Select "Import an iCalendar or vCalendar file (.vcs)" in the "Import and Export Wizard"
  3. Locate the vCalendar file on your hard drive (you may need to select "Import an iCalendar or vCalendar File (*.vcs)" in the file types drop down list)
  4. Select the vCalendar file and click Import

Importing to Apple's iCal (Macintosh)

  1. In iCal, choose "Import..." from the File menu
  2. Select "Import a vCal file" in the import dialog
  3. Locate the vCalendar file on your hard drive
  4. Select the vCalendar file and click Import

Important note for iCal users: Do not double-click the vCalendar file to import your events to iCal! Use the method outlined in the steps above. If you double-click the vCalendar file, a bug in iCal will cause the events to be imported twice.

What about Microsoft Entourage/Outlook 98 on the Macintosh?
Unfortunately, Microsoft Entourage and Outlook 98 support a different calendar format (iCalendar). We appreciate your patience as we work to add support for the iCalendar format.
